Paul Brians' Common English Errors

This page offers brief, witty, and very useful solutions to very common mistakes.

Paradigm Online Writing Assistant

This is an excellent site with step-by-step guidelines for crafting informal, thesis/support, argumentative, and exploratory essays--etc.

Punctuation Made Simple

This site, and offers some really good suggestions about how to avoid the "idiot indicators" that punctuation problems often become.

Advice on editing

The following links offer advice and/or exercises designed to help students edit their own work.

Editing and Proofreading Strategies (from Perdue's OWL): this online writing center has been a favorite of my students for years, and offers helpful advice on this particular topic as well.

Here's some good advice from "Ohio Mom" on a forum called "College Confidential;" the discussion is about admissions essays, but it contains solid, straightforward advice that can be applied to all varieties of writing.

Do remember also that proofreading and help with editing are available in the Academic Improvement Center, room 209. Julie and her staff of tutors can help you polish papers for my classes, sometimes making significant differences in points earned on assignments.
