Aesthetics Arthur Danto, Art, Philosophy, and the Philosophy of Art Humanities, Vol. 4, No. 1 (February 1983), pp. 1-2. A lovely website devoted to the life and work of German philosopher Friedrich Schiller, includes his important essay, On the Sublime. African Art: Aesthetics and Meaning Bayly Art Museum at the University of Virginia Feminist Aesthetics (bibliography) Aesthetics Online (a rather extensive set of links on all aspects of aesthetics) Here's a saved search page on aesthetics from the Humbul Humanities Hub. I haven't checked all the links, but there seem to be some useful ones that I haven't already listed. The Dictionary of the History of Ideas (the old edition) is now online, and features scholarly articles on many topics pertinent to this class. See especially: Art and Play; Myth in Antiquity; Myth in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; Iconography; Genius: Individualism in Art and Artists; Form in the History of Aesthetics; Genius from the Renaissance to 1770; Creativity in Art Criticism Artists on Art from Constable.net (home page of contemporary artist Giff Constable) includes excerpts from writings by a variety of artists. These are all modern (the subject matter of History of Art & Design II and Art & Design Since 1945), but their perspectives are helpful in any context. The home page includes links to Constable's own essays. Reviews and Articles of Interest The Revolution Will Be Illustrated, a New York Times piece by Steven Heller on illustration and posters with a slide show on Visual Books (see "multimedia"). It's Only Natural, This Thing for Books, another Times article, by Randy Kennedy. He reviews an exhibit of books in dioramas, conceived by post-Conceptual artist, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, and displayed in Manhattan's Hispanic Society of America. I love this sort of thing, although some of you might scratch your heads at the very idea. Still, if you want to know what's going on in contemporary art, check the Arts pages in the Sunday Times online on a regular basis. They don't just cover New York, either. |
