Week 1: Art Before History

The recent discovery of the Blombos Cave materials are discussed in two solid articles:

The Earliest Know Artist's Studio (Smithsonian Magazine, October 19, 2011) provides a brief summary of the find.

Stone Age Paint Shop Discovered in South Africa (PBS Science Friday, October 14, 2011) is more in-depth and provides more pictures.

The Bradshaw Foundation's Ice Age Art Gallery features images from several Pleistocene archaeological sites, including some we viewed in class, with comprehensive descriptions of each piece.
